- 5 Ways to Get the Most Out of a Personal Training Session

I frequently see clients come into sessions poorly prepared, not being able to fully utilize their 45 minutes to an hour with their trainer. However, the clients that do the following list of tasks prior to and following a session, see better results in most cases.

  1. Ensure adequate hydration and proper food intake, during and after a session. Doing both of these will help you have the energy needed to give it your all while you are with your trainer. If you start a session and you’re dehydrated, you will become tired more quickly, and if you haven’t eaten, you won’t get the most out of your body while trying to lift challenging weights.
  2. Roll out and perform a dynamic warm up before your session begins. Depending on what you are working on that day, do a warm up based around those body parts. If you don’t know how to roll out and warm up on your own, take a portion of the next few sessions to have your trainer teach you these techniques. That way, when you arrive to the gym early, you can do them, and start the workout fully prepared to jump right into it.
  3. Stretch and cool down after your workout on your own. If you perform the necessary cool down after a workout with your trainer, it will take a good portion of your session, which you are paying good money for. Similar to what I mentioned earlier, take some time out of a few sessions to have your trainer teach you a good post-workout stretch routine.
  4. This may seem obvious, but give each training session your all. If you are having an off day, take the workout as your time to shake it off, and hopefully leave feeling a lot better than before. I’ve never started a workout in a bad mood, and left the gym feeling worse.
  5. Work out on your own when you aren’t with your trainer. If you have a trainer 2 times a week for 45 minutes, that is great, but to see the full benefits of exercise, you need 150–180 min a week. I suggest going on a run, going for a bike ride, and maybe doing yoga. Any additional activity that will burn calories and help your body and increase your level of conditioning is great. I suggested running and biking because they are not activities that require the guidance of a trainer, and you can do them on your own.

I guarantee that if you follow this list while you have a personal trainer, or you are just working out on your own, you will see results.
